Normally, the first part of July is the very tail end of the fly fishing season in the Bahamas, catering to some die-hard anglers looking for tarpon, a few shots a permit, and morning bonefishing before the water temperatures get too hot and push the bones off the flats. Not so this season. First, weird abnormal high winds of May tapered off in June, and July weather has been mostly stable and fly-fishing friendly. Sure, there have been some afternoon thunderstorms, but less than usual, and the one hurricane that potentially threatened the islands faltered and went West.
Add to that the pent-up desire for people to travel, and the Bahamas has had a booming June and July fishing season. We've seen even more tarpon than usual, and many more being caught simply because we've had lots of clients booking to fish these months (when normally they might have been out West fishing for trout. FYI, the West is hot, dry, and crowded.) Then, we've seen way more permit than ever, not only on the West Side, but in the Bights. Lots of shots and some lucky anglers have hooked up. And even the bonefishing as stayed good and consistent, with big fish on the flats way more than in past summers.
Which leads us to believe that we'll have a sensational Fall fishing season starting in October. Lobster season opens August 1, and the fish and most anglers will be on vacation for a couple of months, so get ready for the Fall now. Many lodges are already getting booked up, and our top guides are in demand. We enjoyed a super fun Month of May in the Bahamas! After a year absence with the virus, it was awesome to get on our favorite Bahamian flats again with our favorite guides and friends. Special thanks to Captains Andy Smith, Charlie Neymour, Marvin Miller and Shine Greene. Andros Island will always be for favorite place in the world to fish the salt, but each island has its own great qualities, and we love the diversity of fishing all over....from Bimini, Great Harbour and Chub Cay, to Grand Bahama, Abaco and on south to Exuma, Long Island and Crooked/Acklins.
Also thanks to all of our other friends, lodge staff, chefs, taxi drivers, and all the Bahamian people who make visiting the islands such a pleasure.
