FEATURED LOCATIONS

These locations are some of our favorites, and favorites of our readers. They are recommended depending on the type of trip you're looking for. Remember, define the type of trip you're looking for first, then do your homework, and you'll end up booking a great vacation. And reminder number two: the further south you go in the winter months, the better odds you have of escaping cold fronts.

Broad Shad Cay Lodge - Andy and Sharon Smith have created a unique lodge on this special cay in the North Bight. The lodge 50 feet or so above the water, nestled in the mangroves, and offers sensational views of the bight and Big Wood Cay. Wrap-around wooden decks, native stone work, and super-detailed interior finishes make this a casually elegant place to hang your hat, and to enjoy yourself after a hard day of fishing. Andy and Sharon can only take four anglers at a time, so this is an exclusive place that focuses on hard core fishing. Andy runs the program himself, and bases each fishing day on the tides, and he has no problem running to the West Side, then back east to meet the right tide at the right time of day. If you want to focus on fishing for Big Bonefish, and for tarpon, then Andy will do everything possible to put you on those dream fish. The best way to Andy is by emaling Kim directly. Due to high demand and exclusivity you need to book as far in advance as possible, but that said, sometimes there are last minute cancellations, so if you have to book late, you might get lucky. We hope that applies to your fishing also!

Bair's Lodge is the best option for fishing South Andros. This is a deluxe lodge, with excellent food, and good guides...one of the most comfortable lodges we have ever stayed at. They have expanded the lodge, and now can take 12 anglers, but they are still booked months in advance so you need to make your plans as far ahead as possible. Lots of fish here if you're into numbers...some big fish too, especially in Deep Creek and Little Creek. Please email Kim directly to facilitate your booking. This is one of our TOP RECOMMENDATIONS in the islands for wade fishing and relaxed luxury.

Big Charlie's Lodge on Cargill Creek - One of our favorite guides of all time--Charlie Neymour makes every day on the water fun. Charlie, and his wife, Fatiah, have moved from Nottages Cottages, and now have their own comfortable lodge on Cargill Creek. Aside from great bonefishing, tarpon fishing, and reef fishing, Charlie also offers camps out trips to the West Side for wild boar hunting and wing shooting. You can book Charlie and some of the other best independent guides on Andros by emaling Kim directly.

Two Boys Inn - Great Value and DIY Options -- Frankie Neymour, Charlie's brother, and Barry Neymour, Frankie and Charlie's cousin, have started a comfortable guest house on Cargill Creek that takes up to 8 anglers....this is an ideal spot and a great price for anglers who want to fish with a top guide and/or DIY....excellent wade fishing options in the area. Rooms are large and comfortable, with good meals cooked up by Frankie's wife in the casual dining room. Satellite TV is available in the bar. Email Kim for the details, and she can begin booking your trip.

Pelican Bay Resort - One of our top recommendations for couples, families and serious anglers--Pelican Bay at Lucaya, home of Pelican Bay Bonefishing, has 90 deluxe guest room, and 48 luxury suites. We have stayed in one of the suites, and it was fabulous. Our longtime friend, Greg Vincent, is director of fishing at Pelican Bay. Greg has extensive saltwater guiding experience around the world, and he has turned this program into on of the top saltwater programs in the Caribbean. Part of Greg's program includes saltwater fly fishing schools, which makes Pelican Bay an ideal location for beginners, or advanced anglers who want to perfect their techniques. While Pelican Bay has outstanding personalized service, and too many amenities to list hear, it is also a serious fishing destination. The Grand Bahama fishery rivals Andros for Big Bones, plus the permit and tarpon fisheries are beginning to emerge. We fished with some serious anglers who were very happy they chose this location, and they didn't seem to mind sipping cocktails with us, with Greg and with the other fly fishers around the pool bar each evening while talking over the day and watching the sunset. Serious fishing doesn't have to mean you can't enjoy some luxury after you leave the flats. You can contact Greg Vincent directly at 242-373-9550, or email him.

HAWKS NEST RESORT and MARINA - Cat Island - It is common for offshore boats to take over thirty dorado a day in the waters off Hawk's Nest, both in the Exuma Sound, and in the currents between Cat Island and Long Island. Or you can fish the adjacent creeks for bonefish, and you'll rarely see another angler. Hawk's Nest has deluxe air-conditioned accommodations at reasonable prices. Accommodations overlook the pool, a strip of white sand beach, and the aquamarine Exuma Sound beyond. The restaurant serves fresh seafood, including grilled wahoo, Bahamian-style grouper, and succulent conch salad, or you can enjoy a rack of lamb. The bar is a fun place to hang out and make of fishing stories. The expanded 28-slip marina has new docks, air-conditioned fish-cleaning shed, gas and diesel fuel, electricity, ice and water. The resort also has a comprehensive diving and snorkeling program. A 4,600-foot private airstrip is on the resort property for easy access, or you can fly in commercial to New Bight. For additional information please email Kim.

Winter Haven Inn, Clarence Town - This is our top choice for staying in the Clarence Town area, which is the perfect location to relax, and to enjoy the areas wonderful fishing. The Inn has 8 spacious rooms, all with ocean views, and some overlooking the pool. The on-site Rowdy Boy's Bar and Grill serves the breakfast, lunch and dinner, authentic Bahamian fare at reasonable prices, though the lobster and steak dishes are expensive. The owners are friendly and helpful, and they can book anything you need.....fishing guides, car rentals, island tours, all you have to do is ask.

Bonafide Bonefishing, operated by top guide Docky Smith, is our choice as the best guide to fish with on Long Island. Please visit Docky's web site, which is a wealth of information on fishing in Long Island. Here you can book Docky directly, learn more about his operation and experience, see his tackle recommendations, and look at some great photos. Check out the permit shots. Wow.

NEW OPTION on Mangrove Cay - Swain's Cay Lodge. You can choose from beachfront and oceanview suites or gardenview rooms. You can fish the beachfront on your own, hire an independent guide, go snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or just hang out and catch some rays. A nice option for those who don't want a bonefishing lodge program. Email Kim for details and to book your trip.

FOR COUPLES - HARBOUR ISLAND - The primary fishing areas are around North Eleuthera, and in the vast creek systems. There are good wade fishing options for anglers who want to fish on their own right off the town of Harbour Island, and across the bay on the inside of Whale Point. All the guides in this area are independent and they mostly fish flats that are a 10 to 25 minutes run from the Harbour Island dock, which includes an extensive creek system that cuts into the mainland of North Eleuthera. There are also some areas you can wade fish on your own off the northernwestern side of the island.

UPDATE on the CORAL SANDS: Wow, the recent remodel has put this hotel in the same class as the Pink Sands. Actually, we like it more! The ocean suites are large, airy, with large balconies and luxurious bathrooms. The restaurant, on the covered veranda of the main hotel building, overlooks lush gardens and the deep blue ocean. The beach is perfect, right next door to the Pink Sands. And we love the large living room and bar in the main hotel. No better place for an after dinner drink and a Cuban cigar.

Other nice places to stay include the Dunmore Beach Club, Romora Bay Club, Runaway Hill Club, The Landing, The Rock House (great restaurant too), and the Bahama House Inn. Diving, snorkeling, and a variety of other activities are available. FOR DINING: Don't miss The Landing, and you'll need a reservation in season to get in. The lobster, hog snapper, and chocolate souffles are out of this world! BEST spot for lunch: Sip Sip, on the bluff above the beach, just down the beach to the south of Coral Sands. Perfect ocean vies, fabulous seafood and Goombay Smashes. On the expensive side, but so is all of Harbour Island. Call for a reservation: 333-3316.
