ELEUTHERA, SPANISH WELLS, HARBOUR ISLAND

Island News: A word about DIY fishing......Eleuthera has become one of the most popular islands for DIY fishing, and therefore, many of the obvious flats are fished pretty hard, and the bones have become educated (actually, extremely spooky). So the more you get away from these well-known areas, and off into more remote areas, the better chances you'll have of finding fish that will eat a fly instead of bolting to the next island. DIY in the Bahamas is really becoming just that......you have to do it on your own, be resourceful, be a good angler, be observant......asking questions will only get you so far, then you've got to get out there and put in your time. If you don't have this kind of time....hire a guide.

COCO DI MAMA - Located just six miles north of Governor's Harbour, and five minutes from the international airport (US Airways has direct flights from Miami), on the lee side of the island, this charming beachfront resort features 12 deluxe air-conditioned rooms in three colorful colonial style cottages. The main lodge, designed with a colonial and Bahamian flare, features a wonderful restaurant and bar with satellite TV. You won't find a better place to watch the sunset, or to just hang on the beach and do nothing. The location in the center of the island makes this an ideal location for anglers looking to explore and fish on their own. Car rentals are available to get you to remote flats and beaches.

THE DUCK INN - Located in Governor's Harbour, the Inn features three self-catered, luxury cottages with gardens looking on to the harbour, the ocean bay and Cupid's Cay. The three cottages are surrounded with orchids and fruit trees and all have fully equipped kitchens with dining area and verandah. Each colonial cottage is decorated with wood floors and antique furnishings, and includes AC, ceiling fans and maid service. Bicycles, boat rentals/charters, bonefishing, kayaking, can be part of your package, or you can choose your activities after arrival. This is a good location to explore Eleuthera, with convenient access to markets, gas station, shopping and restaurants. We recommend this location for anglers looking for a "do-it-yourself" trip.

Brought to you by the same people who created ExumaBonefish, EleutherBonefish.com is a site you should visit before planning a bonefishing trip to Eleuthera. The site will help with tides, location of flats, accommodations, car rentals and more. Have fun.

FLATS FISHING PATTERNS: Fairly normal winter weather patterns are in effect.

You should always carry a good breathable rain jacket and pants in the boat for possible rain, and use the jacket as a windbreaker on early morning runs. Our favorite jackets include the PATAGONIA Super Cell Jacket and Pants, and Theta SL by Arc Teryx.

Our favorite flies include #4-6 Gotchas, #4 Borski's Bonefish Critter and Bonefish Slider, #4-6 Pink Bone Wigglers, #4-6 Miheve's Flats Fly, #4-6 Beck's Sililegs, #4-6 Pink Hoovers, #4-6 Spawning Shrimp, and #4-8 Veverka's Mantis Shrimp.

HARBOUR ISLAND - The primary fishing areas are around North Eleuthera, and in the vast creek systems. There are good wade fishing options for anglers who want to fish on their own right off Harbour Island, and across the bay on the inside of Whale Point. All the guides in this area are independent and they mostly fish flats that are a 10 to 25 minutes run from the Harbour Island dock, which includes an extensive creek system that cuts into the mainland of North Eleuthera.

Staying at the PINK SANDS HOTEL(our pick as one of the best hotels in the Bahamas) is a great experience. Anyone, angler or not, will be happy at the Pink Sands. The elegant yet casual accommodations, superb dining, attentive service, tennis courts, swimming pool, and idyllic beach combine to create the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing vacation. The PINK SANDS is the IDEAL location for a honeymoon!

Other nice places to stay include the Coral Sands Hotel, Dunmore Beach Club, Romora Bay Club, Runaway Hill Club, The Landing, and the Bahama House Inn. Diving, snorkeling, and a variety of other activities are available. PLEASE NOTE: We have heard very good things from friends and clients we have sent to the Coral Sands this season. Right next door to the Pink Sands Hotel...and a lot less expensive.

ELEUTHERA - Throughout the length of the island there are a number of small hotels and rental properties suited to anglers and adventure travelers. These properties will give you access to the numerous flats and oceanfront reef fishing options for fishing on your own. As mentioned in the book, the COVE ELEUTHERA and RAINBOW INN are two of the most popular lodging choices. The Cove Eleuthera is under new ownership and renovations are under way. There are a number of rental property options on various web sites, including the link to one in the above banner.

REEF/OFFSHORE: Decent action for wahoo and some tuna.Valentine’s Resort and Marina offers reef and offshore fishing trips and a complete dive center. They also have also built new deluxe condo accommodations. You can contact them directly at 242.333.2142.
