CROOKED AND ACKLINS ISLANDS

ACKLINS ISLAND

Island News: WE'RE BACK! BOOK YOUR BAHAMAS TRAVEL DIRECTLY WITH US - BFFG TRAVEL PLANNING AND BOOKING SERVICES -- We use our extensive experience to personalize all trips to your specific needs. You can fish with our favorite guides in our favorite locations. The beginning of your ideal vacation is just a click away. Email Kim directly to begin planning your ideal trip. As always our travel bookings services are free. You pay nothing extra, so why not leave it to us to plan and book your trip. And that goes for DYI anglers too. We can save you time and money.

The Acklins Island Lodge sits high on the hill above Masons Bay, and provides spectacular views of the Bight side and the Atlantic side. The breeze up here is also great for keeping the mosquitoes down. The guides fish out of well-maintained flats skiffs with Yamaha outboards that are quiet and fuel-efficient. These boats allow anglers to reach remote virgin flats south of the lodge from Jamaica Cay to Jamaica Bay. The flats and creek systems in this vast area are breathtaking, and the bonefish have rarely if ever seen a fly. There is one inner creek and flats system we've fished that stays in our dreams always. While this area is still being explored, the flats north of the lodge in the Snug Corner area are a proven thing. The wadable flats here are extensive, and fishing to tailing fish is common when you play the tides right. Email Kim directly to begin planning your ideal trip.

Grey's Point Bonefish Inn continues to run a good operation. The accommodations are clean, comfortable, and air-conditioned. The spacious lodge area has a dining room and bar. The only downside reported recently was that the mosquito population is still thriving on Acklins. On rainy days you definitely need to be well doped up with bug repellent. 242-344-3210.

May 26, 2009 Fishing Reports

Flats Fishing Patterns: Fishing the southern Bahamas, including Crooked and Acklins, is a way to play the odds against unruly weather patterns. March through July and October through November are prime months, with December through February having a good chance of nice weather. August and September can be great, but these are the prime hurricane season months

REEF/OFFSHORE: The action very good for dorado wahoo plus some tuna and and it is the beginning of the blue marlin season.

CROOKED ISLAND

Island News: Carter and Heidi Andrews are no longer running the fishing program at Pittstown Point Landing. While this is a shame (because Carter and Heidi ran a super professional lodge and guided fishing program), the outstanding guides trained by Carter are still here, and the fishing is still great.

Pittstown Point Landing -- A number of renovations and upgrades are planned including an expanded on-site runway, and a new fully-protected marina. In the meantime, we highly recommend this fishing program right now....now is the time to make your bookings to get in on this opportunity. Excellent fishing for bonefish on the flats, plus some permit and tarpon. World-class reef fishing for amberjack, mutton snapper, yellowtail, sierra mackerel, barracuda, sharks and more, plus unparalleled offshore fishing for wahoo, dorado, tuna, and giant blue marlin.....in season. Email Kimfor more details and pricing.

Flats Fishing Patterns: Normal summer weather patterns are in effect. Fishing the southern Bahamas, including Crooked and Acklins, is a way to play the odds against unruly weather patterns. May 26, 2009 Fishing Reports - Good fishing this past week, but cloudy conditions at times made for difficulty in spotting those bones. That's part of the game. Also a good time to be looking for tarpon and permit.

CROOKED ISLAND/PITTSTOWN POINT LANDING

Our favorite flies include #2-4 Gotchas, #4-6 Gotcha Clouser's and Gold Shiner Clouser's, #4-6 Spawning Shrimp, #4-6 Veverka's Mantis Shrimp, #6 Tan Yarn Crabs, and #4 Borski's Bonefish Critters and Bonefish Sliders. In general, the bonefish here are not spooky, so Clouser's Minnows in a variety of colors are also a good choice in the many deeper water areas.

Guides out of Pittstown Point Landings and Landrail Point, including Elton "Bonefish Shakey" McKinney, Michael Carroll, Jeff Moss, Derrick Ingraham, Randy McKinney and Clinton Scavella, work out of a variety of top-quality flats skiffs with 90 to 130 outboards that will get you to the fishing grounds in a hurry. The run down to French Wells only takes about 15 minutes in these boats depending on the weather and sea conditions. These six guides are among the top guides in the Bahamas. They have worked extremely hard the past few years to improve their skills and upgrade their equipment. Most of these guys have top quality saltwater rods and reels for client's use, and they are really into tying their own flies, so you'll be able to fish with their hottest new patterns on your trip. We highly recommend fishing with these guys, especially if you're looking for an off-the-beaten path experience, great wading for bonefish, plus the chance to catch a variety of species. If the weather turns bad for bonefishing, these guys can take you creek and reef fishing. They use live pilchards to chum a variety of jacks, snappers, grouper, barracuda and sharks. This type of fly fishing is a blast, and the action can be nonstop.

REEF/OFFSHORE: - Now is prime dorado time, plus good for tuna, and the beginning of the blue marlin season. This location provides the best reef and offshore fishing in the Bahamas, and some of the best in the world. Captain Robbie Gibson operates the premiere offshore fishing operation in the southern Bahamas. You can contact him through Pittstown Point Landing. There are 6 prime fishing locations within 40 miles of Landrail Point. For some of the best reef fishing, the run down to Windsor Point takes about 45 minutes. You can count on the reef fishing being great year-round. Snapper fishing, including muttons, is very good now between Landrail and French Wells. Live chum is used to stir the fish into a frenzy, and you can hookup fish with a 10-weight until your arms beg for a rest or a beer. For the bigger tuna you'll need a 12- to 14-weight rod. The Rio Tarpon lines with a clear intermediate sink tip, and the Rio DeepSea high density lines are our favorites for reef and offshore fishing. Our favorite flies for reef fishing include #4/0 Abel Anchovies, #2/0 White Deceivers, #2/0 Conomo Special, #4/0 RM Flatsides, and a variety of Bluewater Baitfish patterns. These patterns also work well offshore for tuna and Dorado, though we really like a #5/0 Green/Yellow Offshore Deceiver for Dorado too. Also, Carter Andrews has developed a series of flies he calls "The Snack Pak". These are some of the most effective reef and bluewater patterns we have ever used.
